On a roll

I am on a roll making gloves at the moment:

This pair is made in Mirasol Hacho hand dyed merino wool using a 4.5mm hook. The label says shade 303 which is apparently called ‘coral reef’. I have never seen a coral reef in real life but the picture in my mind’s eye is not of this colourway. However the gloves are very comfy and it has made a useful inroad into my stash.

Very interesting! The pattern is my own so I have no idea if it is ‘right’ or not. What would the advantages be of starting from the wrist down? I am assuming the cast on edge is a bit tighter than the end row, so maybe that being at the fingers is a good thing??

Hmm, I don’t know… actually I don’t use a chain cast-on because it’s too tight. I do like the way that our brains work in different ways! Because I learned to knit long before I could crochet and because the fingerless mittens I have knitted started from the wrist, I never even considered starting from the other end when I was crocheting them!!

It seems to me to be one of the great things about crochet that there is often more than one way of doing something. Do you start with standing stitches instead of a chain?
